1. An Initial Eye Examination – 30 min (Medicare Rebate organised if eligible)
If you have not already had a comprehensive eye examination within the last two years then this must happen first. At this test your optometrist will thoroughly check the health of your eyes and your prescription, both of which are very important in determining your suitability for Ortho K contact lenses.

2. Measurement, trial and teach appointment – 45 min
Contact lenses are a medical device and as such there is some basic medical care that is required when you become a contact lens wearer. By design, contact lenses are very close to your eyes – that’s why extra care is provided by your optometrist & extra care is required by you the wearer. At this time you will be introduced to contact lenses and taught how to insert and remove the lenses. Depending on how you go with the lenses, there may be a trial of some soft contact lenses before ordering the Ortho K lenses. You will also be taught how to clean and maintain the lenses.

Your optometrist will also need to do a number of measurements of your eyes using the corneal topographer. This instrument measures the front surface curvature of your eyes, and is essential so that the correct lens can be ordered to reshape the eye. If at this point you decide against Ortho K lenses, are unsuitable for them, or would prefer to wear contact lenses during the day, than this initial payment will cover all the consultations you need for standard contact lenses. After this appointment the exact lens that you need to reshape your eye will be ordered.

3. First appointment with new lenses – 30 min
Once your lenses arrive at Eyes @ Narangba, you can trial the new Ortho K lenses. Your optometrist will go through with you again how to insert and remove lenses and repeat the instructions on how to wear them. You will then wear the lenses that evening overnight for the first time. The cost includes the Ortho K lenses, all the consultations required, after hours care, and initial cleaning solutions.

4. First aftercare with new lenses (The next morning) – 15 min
This appointment the morning after wearing your new contact lenses for the first time is to see how well the eyes have responded after the first night of treatment. Normally we would expect the eye to have improved 80-90% of the full effect.

You will be amazed at how good your vision is without glasses or contact lenses. Unfortunately after the first night of wear, the vision will slowly regress in a few hours, towards the end of the day you may find that you need to put your glasses back on. Every night that you wear them the effect will last for longer, and for most people after the third night, the vision is great for the full day.

After this appointment, depending on how your eyes respond, your optometrist will advise you on the next point of action. If you need a slightly different shaped lens, then it will be changed.

5. Subsequent aftercare appointments (1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 monthly thereafter)
As many aftercare appointments as necessary will be covered under the initial fee. It is important that you do return for the aftercare visits as your optometrist wishes to see how the eyes are progressing and ensure that there are no health concerns for the eye. Make sure you bring your lenses in with you at all aftercare appointments so your optometrist can see them and make sure that you are cleaning them correctly.

If you have any concerns with your contact lenses or any other problems with your eyes, come back to see your optometrist ASAP!
